History of the Route: Keeping the Link

Waverley Redevelopment: Keeping the Link

Due to objections and the importance of the historic Leith Wynd/Cranston Street route, by the time the Waverley Redevelopment plans came before parliament, the North British Railway Company included plans for a pedestrian link to connect Jeffrey Street and Calton Road, thereby maintaining the route. The Act of Parliament that was then passed to authorise the Waverley redevelopment allowed for the closing of the north end of Cranston Street, but included a requirement for the railway company to build and maintain a link between Jeffrey Street and Calton Road, near to the historic Leith Wynd/Cranston Street route.

This article describes the North British Railway presentation of the redevelopment plans to the Lords and the subsequent questioning of the NBR by the Lords. By this time, the NBR already planed to provide pedestrian access to replace the route that would otherwise be lost when Cranston Street was closed.
